Qiu Ci is the name of an ancient country in what is now known as the Xinjiang province in China. The old Silk Road passed through it and on this road the cultures of the East and the West met over hundreds of years.  A so-called Quxiang pipa came to China along the Old Silk Road in the third century. It was mixed with a local plucking string instrument called pipa, developed into the pipa as the one we know today. Tracing back this history, Yang Jing has composed in 1993 a piece «Dance along the Old Silk Road» by using the chromatic Tang Dynasty (618AD-907AD) Yan music scale to describe this culture movements and exchanges as it had happened in the history of pipa.
